UFC on FX 2 Bonuses: Kampmann, Benavidez, Johnson, McCall Earn $50,000

Four men walked away from UFC on FX 2 on Friday night with an additional $50,000 to their credit, as Martin Kampmann, Joseph Benavidez, Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall each netted post-fight bonuses at the Allphones Arena in Sydney.

Kampmann took home “Submission of the Night” for his come-from-behind victory over Thiago Alves in the welterweight main event, and Benavidez grabbed “Knockout of the Night” after flattening Yoshihiro Urushitani in their flyweight tournament semifinal. Meanwhile, another pair of 125-pound talents also got in on the fun, as Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall earned “Fight of the Night” honors after three rounds of back-and-forth action.

Alves controlled the majority of the headliner, with the exception of a few tense moments in the first round, during which Kampmann cracked him with a sharp front kick to the jaw and followed up with punch combinations. Round two saw the Brazilian land several clean shots to the Dane’s mug, and the third stanza brought more of the same. As time wore down, “Pitbull” stunned his foe with a clean blow and pursued him against the cage, beginning a barrage of strikes before inexplicably executing a takedown. Kampmann locked on to an arm-in guillotine, rolled Alves over, and applied the needed leverage to garner the submission at 4:12 of the final frame.

A former WEC bantamweight title challenger, Benavidez showed why he is the favorite in many observers’ eyes to win the four-man flyweight tournament. The Team Alpha Male representative scored a first-round takedown on Urushitani and proceeded to pass into mount and eventually take his foe’s back. Round two would last just 11 seconds, as the American buckled his Japanese counterpart with a hard counter right hook and finished the job with ground-and-pound.

After a hard-fought first round that saw both Johnson and McCall produce effective offense, “Mighty Mouse” appeared to get the better of the exchanges in round two. However, the former Tachi Palace Fights champion roared back in the third period, taking Johnson’s back and pounding away with the most significant shots of the fight. At the end of the bout, it was announced -- incorrectly -- that Johnson had taken a majority decision on the judges’ scorecards. In actuality, the bout was scored a majority draw by the judges, and a tabulation error produced the erroneous announcement.
