UFC on FUEL TV 9 results: Tor Troeng chokes out 'TUF' castmate Adam Cella

tor-troeng-1.jpgSTOCKHOLM – Fighting in his home country, Tor Troeng used a well-balanced attack to submit one of his castmates from the current 17th season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Troeng used his strikes to set up a takedown and an eventual first-round submission victory over Adam Cella.

The middleweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 event at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm. It streamed on Facebook ahead of a main card on FUEL TV.

Both fighters won elimination-round bouts on “TUF 17? but suffered opening-round losses once on the show. With the UFC then venturing to Troeng’s home country, officials opted to put the fighters on today’s card rather than waiting for the show’s official conclusion next week.

That turned out to be good news for Troeng, who had the support of the local fans as he posted his highest-profile win to date. The fighter, who’s suffered just one loss (to former UFC title challenger Thales Leites) in his past 14 fights, used strikes to set up an easy takedown early in the fight.

Once on the mat, he maneuvered from full guard to half guard to side control. He then teased a side choke before swiftly hopping on Cella’s back and securing his hooks. After softening up his opponent with punches, Troeng then secured a deep rear-naked choke that prompted a tap-out mere seconds later.

The official stoppage came at the 3:11 mark of the opening round.

“Part of the game plan was taking it to the ground,” Troeng said. “Mixing it up was part of the game plan.”

Troeng (16-4-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) has now won five straight fights and owns 12 stoppages in 16 career wins. Cella (4-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffers his first career loss.
