today’s – MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was on scene and reporting live from Friday’s official UFC on FUEL TV 9 fighter weigh-ins, where all 26 fighters made weight for Saturday’s card.
The festivities took place at Stockholm’s Ericsson Globe Arena, the same venue that hosts Saturday’s event, which has a main card airing on FUEL TV following prelims on Facebook.
Light-heavyweight headliners Gegard Mousasi (33-3-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Ilir Latifi (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) each were on target for the main event. Latifi takes the fight on extreme short notice after teammate and fellow Swede Alexander Gustafsson was ruled out due to a training cut suffered this past week. Latifi came in at 206 pounds for the fight, which will be his UFC debut. Mousasi, a former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ also making his UFC debut, was 204. He’ll fight as a favorite of as much as 15-to-1.
In the co-main event, another former Strikeforce standout makes his UFC debut. Ryan Couture (6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) weighed in at 154 pounds for his fight against “TUF 9? winner Ross Pearson (14-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who was 155. And in the lone heavyweight fight on Saturday’s card, Matt Mitrione (5-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) came in at 259 for his fight against Philip De Fries (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who was 248.
The prelim weigh-ins featured a pair of intense staredowns that resulted in shoves with the fighters needing to be separated by UFC officials. Former Cage Warriors two-division champ Conor McGregor (12-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), making his UFC debut, inched continually closer to Marcus Brimage (6-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC), talking the whole time. Just as the two were about to be broken apart, they touched foreheads and Brimage threw a shove. And after Sweden’s own Reza Madadi (12-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) got off the scale, he walked quickly to Michael Johnson (12-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC) while yelling. He got chest-to-chest with the American, who then pushed him away. They were quickly separated, and moments later got back together for a proper faceoff – talking to each other throughout.
