Matt Mitrione was in pretty desperate need of a win on Saturday, and he got one in a big way.
Coming into the fight with two straight losses and approaching two years since his most recent victory, “TUF 10? fan favorite Mitrione (6-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) stopped Philip De Fries (9-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) just 19 seconds into their fight. De Fries came forward, ran into a proverbial brick wall, and when Mitrione followed him to the ground, he did so with bad intentions.
The heavyweight bout was part of the main card of Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 event at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm.
Mitrione got back in the win column after back-to-back losses to Cheick Kongo and Roy Nelson, the latter of which came at the TUF 16 Finale’s main event in December. He had been worried about a third straight loss potentially leading to his release, but with his devastating knockout he doesn’t have to worry about that now. Instead, after taking no damage in the fight, he can probably return in reasonably quick fashion should he so desire.
