UFC on FOX 8 results/photos: Robbie Lawler KOs Bobby Voelker with vicious kick

SEATTLE – The longer Robbie Lawler stayed in the cage with Bobby Voelker, the more comfortable he seemed to get with the idea of visiting some memorable act of violence upon him.

So when Lawler sat Voelker down with a head kick early in the second round, it was hardly a surprise. The same could be said about the follow-up right hand that starched Voelker as he went to sit up, thereby ending the fight at 0:24 of the second round.

The welterweight bout was part of today’s UFC on FOX 8 event at KeyArena in Seattle. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.

From the opening moments of the bout, it seemed as though Voelker had little with which to threaten Lawler, who attacked when he pleased, usually with immediately noticeable results. He seemed to have Voelker hurt several times in the opening round, and the TKO seemed like it couldn’t be far off.

When the head kick found its home early in the second, Voelker went down right away. That’s when Lawler walked casually up to him for one last punch that would settle the matter.

“I’m excited,” Lawler said. “Camp went really well and I felt really good with the weight cut. They really woke me up at American Top Team. I’m happy, but I want to go home and see my family. I’m healthy, so I want to get back in there and train, but I just want to spend some time with my family right now.”

“I’m obviously not happy with my performance,” Voelker said. “It was a tough fight, and Robbie is very quick and explosive. I got hit in the eye in the first round and it was hard to see for about 20 seconds. Not sure if it was a glove or a finger, but my vision came back after that. Hat’s off to Robbie.”

Lawler (11-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) has now won two straight since returning to the UFC after his run in Strikeforce. Voelker (24-10 MMA, 0-2 UFC) is winless in two tries since his transition from the same organization.
