Benson Henderson eked out a split-decision win over Gilbert Melendez on Saturday night.

Then he got a much more definitive answer, and the one he was ultimately much happier about, when he proposed to his girlfriend in the octagon. She said yes, then leapt into his arms to celebrate not only his win, but their engagement.

Henderson (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) defended his UFC lightweight title for the third time by beating Melendez (21-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), the former Strikeforce lightweight champ who lives and trains not far from San Jose, Calif., where UFC on FOX 7 took place with a main card on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.

The crowd at HP Pavilion, unhappy with the judges’ decision, showered down boos on Henderson – but relented a little bit when the proposal was successful.
