SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Alan Jouban resisted the urge to brawl with Mike Perry, but it didn’t stop him from scoring a couple key knockdowns in a victorious effort.
Jouban (15-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) survived one blitz and put his solid left hand to use to down Perry (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) via unanimous decision.
The welterweight bout opened today’s UFC on FOX 22 main card at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif. It aired on FOX following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
For Jouban, the challenge in this fight was figuring out ways to hurt Perry without engaging in the kind of haymaker-fest his opponent wanted. He managed to do that by staying on the move, even when his offense was effective, but especially when it wasn’t.
After putting Perry down with a straight left hand early, Jouban struggled with the punching and kicking power of his opponent late in the round. Still, as long as Jouban stayed mobile he remained a problem for Perry, who spent most of the night following Jouban and looking for opportunities that never came.
Jouban’s discipline served him well later in the fight, as he floored Perry again late in the second with another left hand, then spent most of the third picking him apart from a distance. While it was Perry who was the aggressor for most of the fight, weaving forward and looking to land power punches, it was Jouban who scored with the cleaner shots.
That made things relatively easy for the judges, all three of whom gave the fight to Jouban, turning in scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.
With the victory, Jouban has now won three straight in the UFC. Perry suffers the first defeat of his pro career.
