UFC Working to Add Women’s 115-Pound Division

Dana White at UFC 144There was once a time when UFC president Dana White said that women would “never” grace the inside of the Octagon.

Following the unabashed success of starting a women’s 135-pound division, with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey leading the charge, White on Friday revealed that the UFC is finally ready to take women’s MMA a step further.

The brash UFC president revealed on Friday’s “The Fighter & The Kid” podcast on FoxSports.com that his company is currently working on adding a women’s 115-pound division.

“I’ll give you guys something nobody knows yet,” teased Whited. “We’re actually working on bringing in another division for the women, which I said would never happen for a long time.”

While most would think they would jump up or down one weight class, White said that the plan wasn’t to add 145 pounders or 125 pounders, but the 115-pound strawweight class. Strawweight is limited to fighters weighing 106 pounds up to 115 pounds.

White did not reveal any of the fighters that the UFC was targeting or when he expected the division to debut, but he did reveal part of the reasoning behind the move, and it directly rates to the recent success of women on The Ultimate Fighter.

“When the women fight (on TUF), they’re outrating the men by 44-percent,” said White.

“Never in a million years did I think it would take off the way it has.”
