UFC President Confirms Derek Brunson Suffered Broken Jaw Requiring Surgery

Strikeforce Middleweight Derek Brunson by Will Fox

Derek Brunson andYoel Romero had a back-and-forth battle at UFC Fight Night 35 on Wednesday night in Duluth, Ga.

For a time, Brunson had the upper hand, looking like he was close to victory. Romero, however, turned the tables late in the fight and scored a TKO stoppage for the win.

The finish came over 13 minutes into the fight, a fight that saw the two 185-pound men each land several heavy blows, one of which broke Brunson’s jaw.

It was unclear immediately after the fight, but it appeared that Brunson might have fractured his jaw. UFC president Dana White was still unclear on Brunson’s status at the post-fight press conference, but later confirmed the bad news.

Although sparse on details, White tweeted before boarding a plane heading home to Las Vegas, “Just went to the hospital to see @DerekBrunsonMMA he has a fractured jaw. He is waiting to have surgery.”

MMAWeekly.com will stay abreast of the situation and provide updates as we have further information on Brunson’s condition.
