UFC Fight Night 99 results: Artem Lobov wins decision, upsets Teruto Ishihara

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Artem Lobov neutralized Teruto Ishihara early and then mauled him late to take unanimous-decision victory.

Despite being dropped in the final round of an otherwise dominant performance, Lobov (12-12-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC) rebounded to claim the win over a game Ishihara (9-3-2 MMA, 2-1-1 UFC) by scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

The featherweight bout opened the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 99 event at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The entire event streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Lobov’s success in this fight was based in large part on controlling the range against Ishihara. As Lobov backed Ishihara into the fence and looked to land his heavy right hand, he managed to avoid charging into Ishihara’s dangerous left as other opponents have done.

The exception came in the final round. After controlling Ishihara and negating his offense in the first two frames, a hard left hand from Ishihara sent Lobov crashing to the floor midway through the third.

But instead of trying to finish his opponent with a flurry of strikes, Ishihara instead decided to go willingly into Lobov’s guard, perhaps due to sheer exhaustion, and there found his momentum stalled.

Lobov would bounce back late in the round, nearly locking up an arm-triangle choke before taking Ishihara’s back and battering him with punches before the horn.

Once the judges had their say, all three gave the fight to Lobov, with two of them giving him every round.

Lobov’s win gives him a two-fight winning streak, his first such streak since coming to the UFC. Ishihara’s loss snaps his own two-fight streak, handing him his first defeat since 2014.
