UFC Fight Night 95 results: Jussier Formiga cruises to unanimous decision over Dustin Ortiz

BRASILIA, Brazil – It was a vintage performance for Jussier Formiga, which meant a horrible night of deja vu for Dustin Ortiz.

Time after time, Formiga (19-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) ducked under Ortiz’s (15-6 MMA, 4-4 UFC) punches and found a way to secure back control, where his constant threat of submission left judges little other choice than to award him a unanimous decision.

The flyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 95 event at Nilson Nelson Gymnasium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. It aired on FS1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on FS1.

The final scores were 30-27, 29-27 and 29-28 for Formiga, the No. 5-ranked fighter in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings.

Ortiz availed himself well considering the inevitable outcome of each round. He executed a sweep that put him in top position and allowed for some brief moments of ground and pound, when he wasn’t defending against an armbar or triangle, of course.

Attempts to swing momentum on his feet were less successful, however. A headlock throw was intercepted by Formiga and used as a setup to take mount. When Ortiz tried to escape, the Brazilian dutifully assumed back control.

A pair of right hands for Ortiz provided Formiga another window to duck under the arms and get to his favored position. This time, Ortiz managed to escape his opponent’s clutches, and he tried to make up for lost ground with a few thunderous punches as he stood over head. There just simply wasn’t enough time to work.

Formiga gets back to the win column after a decision loss to onetime title challenger Henry Cejudo, while Ortiz, no stranger to top-flight competition, has now lost three out of four.
