UFC Fight Night 86 post-fight facts: Dos Santos lands record number of body strikes

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos (18-4 MMA 12-3 UFC) produced a record output of strikes when he dominated Ben Rothwell (36-10 MMA, 6-4 UFC) for a decisive unanimous-decision win in UFC Fight Night 86’s headliner.

The heavyweight matchup headlined Sunday’s FOX Sports 1-televised event at Zagreb Arena, which marked the organization’s debut in Croatia. The 13-fight card had a mixed bag of results, but in terms of history-making performances, Dos Santos’ was the most significant.

The Reebok Athlete Outfitting payout for the event totaled $107,500.

Debuting fighters went 1-7 at the event.

Derrick Lewis, Alejandro Perez, Mairbek Taisumov and Jared Cannonier earned $50,000 UFC Fight Night 86 fight-night bonuses.

UFC Fight Night 86 drew an announced attendance of 13,177 for a live gate of $549,000.

Betting favorites went 9-3 on the card. One fight had even odds.

Total fight time for the 13-bout card was 2:22:36.

Ben Rothwell and Junior Dos Santos

Dos Santos’ 12 victories in UFC heavyweight competition are tied for third most in divisional history behind Frank Mir (16) and Andrei Arlovski (14).

Dos Santos has alternated wins and losses over his past seven UFC appearances.

Dos Santos’ 157 significant strikes landed set a new single-fight UFC heavyweight record.

Dos Santos’ 92 significant body strikes landed set a new single-fight UFC record.

Rothwell had his four-fight winning streak snapped for his first defeat since January 2013.

Rothwell suffered his first decision loss since Sept. 24, 2011 – a span of 1,660 days (more than four years) and seven fights.

Lewis (15-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) has earned 14 of his 15 career victories by knockout. That includes all six of his wins under the UFC banner.

Lewis’ three-fight UFC winning streak in heavyweight competition is tied for the second-longest active streak in the division behind champ Fabricio Werdum (six).

Lewis’ six knockout victories in UFC competition since 2014 are the most among active fighters in the organization.

Lewis is the only fighter in UFC history to have his first eight appearances end in a knockout.

Gabriel Gonzaga (17-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) fell to 1-4 in his past five UFC appearances.

Gonzaga fell to 5-5 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in January 2012.

Gonzaga’s 24 takedowns landed in UFC heavyweight competition are tied for third most in divisional history behind Cain Velasquez (29) and Randy Couture (25).

Gonzaga has suffered nine of his 11 career losses by knockout.

Francis Ngannou

Francis Ngannou (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has earned all seven of his career victories by stoppage.

Ngannou has earned both of his UFC victories by knockout.

Curtis Blaydes (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had his five-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of his career.

Timothy Johnson (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) earned the first decision victory of his career.

Marcin Tybura (13-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Igor Pokrajac (28-13 MMA, 4-8 UFC) was unsuccessful in his return to the UFC after being released in December 2014.

Pokrajac extended his UFC winless skid to six fights. He hasn’t earned a victory with the promotion since May 2012.

Maryna Moroz (7-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) earned the first decision victory of her career.

Cristina Stanciu (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had her five-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of her career.

Nicolas Dalby (14-1-1 MMA, 1-1-1 UFC) had his 15-fight unbeaten streak snapped for the first defeat of his career.

Dalby suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Ian Entwistle (9-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has suffered all three of his career losses by stoppage.

Mairbek Taisumov (25-5 MMA, 5-1 UFC) has earned 23 of his 25 career victories by stoppage.

Taisumov has earned four of his five UFC victories by knockout.

Taisumov’s four-fight UFC stoppage streak is second longest among active fighters in the organization behind middleweight champ Luke Rockhold (five).

Damir Hadzovic (10-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his career.

Filip Pejic (10-2-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had his nine-fight unbeaten streak snapped for his first defeat since June 2012.

Pejic suffered the first submission loss of his career.

Lucas Martins

Lucas Martins (16-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) earned just the second decision victory of his career and his first since Aug. 18, 2012 – a span of 1,331 days (nearly four years) and 13 fights.

Jared Cannonier (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has earned seven of his eight career victories by stoppage.

Cyril Asker (7-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his career.

Alessio Di Chirico (9-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had his nine-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of his career.
