UFC Fight Night 83 post-fight facts: 'Cowboy' joins elite company with latest win

Ordinarily a slow starter, Donald Cerrone needed less than three minutes to submit Alex Oliveira in Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 83 headliner at Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center.

“Cowboy” Cerrone (29-7 MMA, 16-4 UFC) finished the fight via first-round triangle choke in his UFC welterweight debut against fellow “Cowboy” Oliveira (13-3-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in the FOX Sports 1-televised headliner.

Debuting fighters went 0-3 at the event.

Cerrone, Chris Camozzi, Lauren Murphy and Kelly Faszholz earned $50,000 UFC Fight Night 83 fight-night bonuses.

UFC Fight Night 83 drew an announced attendance of 7,330 for a live gate of $572,547.

Betting favorites went 10-3 on the card.

Total fight time for the 13-bout card was 2:10:15.

Alex Oliveira and Donald Cerrone

Cerrone was successful in his UFC welterweight debut.

Cerrone’s 22 victories in UFC/WEC lightweight competition are the most in the combined history of the two organizations. Those 22 wins are also tied for the fourth most in UFC/WEC/PRIDE/Strikeforce combined history behind Wanderlei Silva (27), Dan Henderson (24) and Mirko Filipovic (23).

Cerrone has earned 16 UFC/WEC fight-night bonuses, the most of any fighter in the combined history of the two organizations.

Oliveira has suffered both of his UFC losses by submission.

Derek Brunson

Derek Brunson’s (15-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) four-fight UFC winning streak in middleweight competition is tied with Rafael Natal for the third longest active streak in the division behind Yoel Romero (seven) and Luke Rockhold (five).

Brunson improved to 6-1 in his past seven fights after a 2-3 stretch from 2012-2014.

Brunson’s three-fight first-round knockout streak is the longest among active UFC fighters.

Brunson’s three-fight first-round knockout streak is third longest in UFC history behind Don Frye (five) and Shane Carwin (four).

Roan Carneiro (20-10 MMA, 3-4 UFC) fell to 1-1 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in February 2015.

Carneiro suffered the first true knockout loss of his career. His two previous TKO defeats were due to a corner stoppage and cuts.

Cody Garbrandt

Cody Garbrandt (8-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has earned seven of his eight career victories by knockout.

Garbrandt has earned both of his UFC stoppage victories by knockout.

Augusto Mendes (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had his five-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of his career.

Dennis Bermudez’s (15-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) eight victories in UFC featherweight competition are tied for second most in divisional history behind Max Holloway (11).

Bermudez improved to 8-2 since losing to Diego Brandao at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale.

Bermudez’s 33 takedowns landed in UFC featherweight competition are the most in divisional history.

Tatsuya Kawajiri (35-9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) fell to 7-2 since he dropped to the featherweight division in July 2011.

Kawajiri has completed 15 takedowns in his four UFC appearances. He’s landed at least one in all five of his fights.

Kawajiri has suffered both of his UFC losses by decision.

Chris Camozzi and Joe Riggs

Chris Camozzi (21-10 MMA, 8-7 UFC) earned his first knockout victory since June 22, 2012 – a span of 1,349 days (nearly four years) and nine fights.

Camozzi’s 26-second knockout victory marked the second fastest finish in UFC history to stem from knee strikes.

Joe Riggs (41-17 MMA, 5-7 UFC) fell to 1-1 since he returned to the middleweight division in September.

Riggs fell to 1-3 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in December 2014.

Riggs has suffered 14 of his 17 career losses by stoppage.

Riggs suffered his first knockout loss since May 7, 2011 – a span of 1,751 days (nearly five years) and 11 fights.

Shane Campbell (12-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) suffered his first decision loss since March 11, 2011 – a span of 1,808 days (nearly five years) and 11 fights.

Anthony Smith (25-11 MMA, 1-1 UFC) earned his first UFC victory after he went 0-1 in his previous stint in June 2013.

Smith improved to 8-1 since he was released from the UFC in June 2013.

Smith earned just the second decision victory of his 36-fight career.

Nathan Coy (15-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has earned six of his past seven career victories by decision.

Marion Reneau (6-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) has suffered all three of her career losses by decision.

Lauren Murphy

Lauren Murphy (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) has earned seven of her nine career victories by knockout.

Murphy’s victory at 4:55 of Round 3 marked the latest stoppage in UFC women’s bantamweight history.

Murphy’s victory also marked the fourth latest stoppage ever in a three-round UFC fight.

Kelly Faszholz (3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) had her three-fight winning streak snapped for the first defeat of her career.

Anthony Hamilton (14-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.
