RIO DE JANEIRO – Erick Silva handed Josh Koscheck a loss in the onetime title challenger’s last contractual obligation to the UFC – and finally got a second straight win under the UFC banner.
Silva (18-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) swarmed Koscheck (17-10 MMA, 15-10 UFC) with punches before securing a guillotine choke that forced a tapout in the first round.
The welterweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC Fight Night 62 event at Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 2 and UFC Fight Pass.
The official time of stoppage was the 4:21 mark of the first round. For the first time in his octagon career, Silva has won two fights in a row after bouncing between wins and losses since his debut in 2011.
For Koscheck, the loss signals his fifth straight defeat. The veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 1” previously told MMAjunkie Radio that the Silva bout was the last on his contract and that he planned on ending his career with the UFC, though in a recent interview, he declined to confirm he would retire after Saturday night.
Koscheck availed himself well early in the fight, pressuring Silva to the cage and working for a takedown. Silva resisted the efforts and made the veteran pay with a straight left.
A right hand and body shot prompted Koscheck to shoot for a takedown. Silva seized upon his opponent’s exposed neck and jumped into position for a guillotine. After a brief struggle, Koscheck was forced to tap.
