UFC Fight Night 29 results, photos: Dong Hyun Kim knocks Erick Silva cold

BARUERI, Brazil – It’s been more than five years since Dong Hyun Kim got a finish in a fight. Apparently he was saving up for something big.

That something big came three minutes into the second round against home fan and betting favorite Erick Silva with a massive knockout that left the Brazilian fans stunned and Kim leaping into the arms of his cornermen on the cage.

The welterweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC Fight Night 29 event at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on the same channel.

Kim put pressure on early, but Silva tried to land a spinning back elbow. Kim shot in for a single-leg takedown, but he couldn’t get the takedown. Moments later, he again fended it off. Kim missed badly with a wild spinning fist, and Silva tried to quickly take advantage in the striking game, landing knees and punches before Kim tied things up.

Two minutes in, Kim again wanted that spinning fist, and again it was off the target. But he managed to land a left hand that sent Silva to the canvas, and Kim quickly was on him and popped his way up to full mount while Silva held on. Silva worked his way out of it, then had to fend off a kimura in a round that went toward Kim.

But in the second, Silva exploded out of the gate and landed some big bombs, then a massive elbow that appeared to drop the South Korean – though he may have just slipped, as he recovered quickly to tie Silva up. Both fighters slowed noticeably before the midpoint of the second round, and that’s when Silva tried to take advantage. He just missed a spinning elbow, but then hit a solid uppercut.

But seconds later, both fighters threw punches at the same time, and Kim’s left hand landed in a major way. Silva was out cold before he hit the canvas, and a follow-up hammerfist on the ground was icing on the cake. The end came at the 3:01 mark of the second.

Hyun Kim (18-2-1 MMA, 9-2 UFC) won for the third straight time and has victories in four of his past five fights. Silva (15-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is back in the loss column and still hasn’t been able to put together a win streak in the UFC.
