UFC Fight Night 29 results, photos: Alan Patrick pounds out Garett Whiteley

BARUERI, Brazil – Garett Whiteley wasn’t worried about being in host Brazilian territory. But he apparently should have been worried about Alan Patrick’s left hand.

Patrick landed a solid left in the first round, then finished things up with nearly a dozen more punches on the ground to get the stoppage at the 3:54 mark of the frame.

The lightweight bout opened up the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 29 event at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. It aired on FOX Sports 1 ahead of the main card on the same channel.

Patrick wanted the fight on the ground early and got it there, but Whiteley was able to get back to his feet quickly. After taking an accidental low kick, Whiteley looked good after the restart when he landed a good uppercut.

But soon after, Patrick got the crowd energized when he landed a spinning elbow and tried to drill a knee in tight. Whiteley missed over the top, but he landed a good knee after shrugging off a a takedown attempt.

But right after that, Whiteley came forward with a leading right uppercut – and Patrick landed a big left hand as Whiteley moved in. Whiteley hit the canvas, and Patrick was on top of him in a hurry to pound him out with nearly a dozen left hands before Marc Goddard stepped in to shut things down.

“I wanted to come in with a win and make my contract count (and) make sure the UFC knows I’m not joking around,” Patrick said. “I’m ready for the next one – I’m hungry for fights. I think he didn’t know I had heavy hands. He must have seen videos of me with mostly submissions, but we train a lot of boxing and I hit hard.”

“I felt good during the fight – I felt good until I got caught,” Whiteley said. “It just happens. I thought he’d try to take me down more, but I guess I was defending well. He punches hard and I got caught – that’s it.”

Patrick (11-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) stayed unbeaten in his UFC debut, moving to 4-0 in 2013. Whiteley (7-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), also fighting in the UFC for the first time, lost for the first time in his MMA career.
