BOSTON – Steven Siler saw his opening early against Mike Brown, and he made sure he didn’t need a second one.
After dropping Brown with a short right hand in the opening seconds, Siler pounced on a wounded Brown to earn a TKO stoppage at 0:50 of Round 1.
The featherweight bout took place today at UFC Fight Night 26 at Boston’s TD Garden. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on FOX Sports 1.
It was a particularly well-placed right hand that started things off for Siler, sending Brown tumbling to the mat. Follow-up strikes from Siler made Brown’s legs go limp and his body go flat on the mat, though he was back to his feet quickly to protest referee Yves Lavigne’s stoppage.
“I’ve been working a lot on my hands because we didn’t want to go to the ground with him,” Siler said. “He has great jiu-jitsu and ground-and-pound, so luckily I was able to avoid that trouble and get the finish on the feet. I knew I needed to finally step up and make a name for myself. A former world champion and No. 1 in the division only lasted 50 seconds (against me), so hopefully this is the fight that does it for me.”
Brown (26-9 MMA, 2-4 UFC) snaps a two-fight winning streak with loss, his first since January of 2011. Siler (23-10 MMA, 5-1 UFC) has now won two in a row in the UFC, rebounding from his decision loss to Darren Elkins last November.
