UFC Fight Night 102 results: Andrew Sanchez tags Trevor Smith early, earns clean sweep on cards

ALBANY, N.Y. – Andrew Sanchez hurt Trevor Smith early and kept the pressure on throughout, and it paid off on the judges’ scorecards.

All three officials saw the contest as a clean sweep for Sanchez (9-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC), who came just shy of putting Smith (14-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC) away and had to settle for the unanimous decision victory with scores of 30-27 across the board.

The middleweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 102 event at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

It was his ability to score with punches from close range that initially turned the bout in Sanchez’s favor. In early tie-ups with Smith, Sanchez landed a flurry of stinging uppercuts and looping hooks that put Smith on wobbly legs in the first round.

But Smith wouldn’t go away easily. He regained his wits in time for the second frame, though he couldn’t turn the tide against a very patient and effective Sanchez, who kept Smith guessing with a mix of head kicks and short-range strikes.

By the third, Smith’s left eye was almost completely closed, limiting both his offense and his defense, though he never wilted under the pressure from Sanchez. Still, after three one-sided rounds it was easy to see who the judges would side with, and all three were in agreement in giving Sanchez every round.

The win makes it three in a row for Sanchez, with the last two coming in the UFC. Smith’s loss snaps a two-fight winning streak.
