The 22 fighters participating on Saturday’s UFC 179: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 fight card officially weighed in at Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
Featherweight champion Jose Aldo puts his title on the line in a rematch against top contender Chad Mendes in the fight card’s main event. Both fighters tipped the scales at 145-pounds.
“There’s a lot that’s changed (since the first fight). I’ve grown up a lot. I saw the mistake that I made in the first fight. I’ve learned from it. I’m ready,” said Mendes after weighing in.
“He’s not going to be able to take my belt. Everyone can be at ease that the belt is staying here in Rio,” said Aldo.
Three fighters failed to make weight for their scheduled fights. Scott Jorgensen missed the mark by two pounds for his flyweight match up against Wilson Reis. Fabricio Camoes and Tony Martin failed to make the lightweight limit for their preliminary bout. The fighters have two hours to cut the extra pounds. Since Camoes and Martin are fighting each other, they can agree to compete at a catchweight.
