UFC 178 shifts to Las Vegas on Sept. 27 for Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson II

At long last, the big light heavyweight rematch everyone has been talking about is set in stone. Mostly, anyway.

After moving from a rumored Aug. 30 date in Las Vegas to Sept. 27 in Toronto, the Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson rematch will keep its late September date – but it will take place in Las Vegas.

A venue, however, is not yet finalized for the bout, which will headline the UFC 178 pay-per-view.

UFC President Dana White, along with company CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, made the announcement as part of a special live edition of “UFC Tonight” on Friday at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) first fought Gustafsson (16-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) at UFC 165 in Toronto this past September, where he edged out a narrow unanimous decision in the toughest fight of his career.

While Jones has said he would prefer to fight Daniel Cormier next, after some behind-the-scenes negotiating, he agreed to fight Gustafsson in a much-talked about rematch.

A venue for the bout is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, but is likely to be, as usual, between MGM Grand Garden Arena and Mandalay Bay Events Center.
