UFC 178: Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson II will be held in Las Vegas

Sorry Torontonians, Las Vegas is the place to be for one of the biggest fights of the year.

The first epic clash between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson took place in Toronto, Ontario, and the rematch was supposed to be in the same city. Those plans have been nixed, and on a special edition of UFC Tonight, Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed that UFC 178 will be in Las Vegas on 9/27. Believe it or not, it's the first time that Jones has fought in Vegas as a champion, although they tried to accomplish this in 2012 for UFC 151 before that card got cancelled. Jones also defended his title in Toronto back in 2011 when he famously choked out Lyoto Machida.

Las Vegas, Toronto, and Stockholm were all in consideration for this highly anticipated rematch. According to UFC president Dana White, it was a business decision to choose Vegas as the hub for UFC 178.

As for the UFC in Toronto? You can forget about holding a show there at all this year. The Canadian Press also reports that the planned December PPV in Montreal could be pushed to March, meaning that the recent UFC 174 in Vancouver would stand as the only PPV event in Canada all year.

This is the UFC's first year in Canada without Georges St-Pierre in its history, and it's fair to say that it has not been a good one at all. They've run just two shows this year - The TUF Nations Finale in Quebec City and UFC 174, neither of which particularly sold well nor drew enough eyeballs on the television. With the potential for two PPVs to be shelved, the only other Canadian card left on the calendar is the October 4th Fox Sports 1 show in Halifax.

Heading back to UFC 178, there's no word yet on an official venue, but the fight is official and so is the date. It's just the 2nd fight for Gustafsson in Sin City, with his first ending in a TKO stoppage of Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141 to close out 2011.
