UFC 175 results, photos: Chris Weidman tops Lyoto Machida in five-round war

chris-weidman-ufc-175LAS VEGAS –In what turned out to be a tale of two halves of the fight, Chris Weidman retained his UFC middleweight title with a decision win over Lyoto Machida on Saturday night.

Weidman (12-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) looked great for three rounds against Machida (21-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) before the Brazilian poured it on in the fourth and fifth rounds, putting the champion in danger on several occasions – including the last 10 seconds of the bout. But it was Weidman who took the unanimous nod with scores of (49-45, 48-47, 49-46).

The middleweight title bout was the main event of today’s UFC 175 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Machida didn’t seem to have answers for Weidman in the standup game through the first two rounds, and the wrestler peppered in a few takedowns, as well. But in the fourth, Weidman started to eat some kicks to the body – and started to look winded.

The fifth round was more of a slugfest, with a bloodied-up Machida catching Weidman several times, but unable to finish him.
