UFC 164 results and photos: Chad Mendes becomes first to TKO Clay Guida

MILWAUKEE – For the first two rounds, it seemed like Chad Mendes’ biggest problem was simply finding Clay Guida.

Early on in the third, however, his right hand located Guida’s chin and put him down hard, forcing a TKO stoppage at 0:30 the round.

The featherweight bout was part of today’s UFC 164 event at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.

The early going was classic Guida fare, as the Greg Jackson-trained fighter used constant movement and his indefatigable attack to avoid the brunt of Mendes’ offense. Still, when Guida couldn’t take Mendes down and couldn’t get the better of him in striking exchanges on the feet, he seemed to be at a loss for a Plan B.

That’s when Mendes unloaded with a right hand counter that stunned Guida, then followed with another right that dropped him and forced Guida to turtle up on the mat before referee Yves Lavigne called a stop to it.

“I needed to make a statement,” Mendes said after the win. “I want that title shot, I want Jose Aldo, I want that belt.”

Guida (30-14 MMA, 10-8 UFC) suffered the first TKO stoppage of his career, and has now lost three of his last four. Mendes (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) has won four straight fights via TKO or KO since his loss to featherweight champion Jose Aldo in January 2012.
