UFC 158 results/photos: Jordan Mein delivers Dan Miller first stoppage loss

MONTREAL – Welcome to the UFC, Jordan Mein.

The 23-years-young Canadian made the most of his octagon debut, overcoming submission trouble to turn the tables on Dan Miller.

The welterweight bout served on the FX-televised preliminary card of UFC 158, which took place Saturday at Montreal’s Bell Centre. It followed additional prelims on Facebook and preceded the pay-per-view main card.

Mein, who despite his youth is a veteran of 35 professional bouts, showed promise early on in the fight while tagging Miller with a stiff jab as they traded punches. That prompted Miller to time a takedown, and the UFC veteran quickly capitalized on a scramble. Locked in an armbar, Mein was forced to scramble as Miller cranked his right arm. Although he escaped to his feet, it was a long spell before Mein used the limb.

Switching stances, Mein found himself exposed to a body kick and stiff jabs from Miller, who appeared to be cruising ahead in the fight. But Mein used his left hand to expert effect when he dropped Miller with a straight punch, and instead of pouncing on his downed opponent, he offered a standup.

A hard right hook hurt Miller in a subsequent exchange, and Mein set the finish in motion with a trio of left hands to the body. Crumpling to the mat, Miller found himself on the wrong end of a ground-and-pound attack and forced the referee to intervene at the 4:42 mark of the first frame.

“Dan has never been stopped in the UFC, so that was one of my goals, and I achieved it,” the humble Mein said afterward.

With the win, Mein (27-8 MMA, 1-0 UFC) improves to three straight wins following a split-decision loss to Tyron Woodley under the Strikeforce banner.

Miller (14-7 MMA, 6-6 UFC) is now 1-1 at welterweight following a 2-5 run that followed a trio of middleweight wins in his early UFC days.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of Saturday’s UFC 158 event at Bell Centre in Montreal. It aired on FX following additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.
