It was a happy homecoming for Brazilian Demian Maia (17-4) who kept his unbeaten record at welterweight alive with a first-round submission victory over Rick Story (14-6) at UFC 153 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Story came in quick with an overhand left, but Maia tried hard for the takedown before slamming Story to the mat. Maia advanced his position and went to take the back of Story.
With the American looking to bring the fight back to the feet, Maia went to full mount, landing softening blows before taking Story’s back locking in the choke. Story tapped after just 2:30 in round one.
“I am very happy to fight here. This is the first time I’ve fought in Brazil for the UFC,” Maia said post-fight. “This is great.”
After dropping down to welterweight for UFC 148, Maia has recorded two first-round finishes, while Story has suffered three losses in his last four UFC appearances.
