UFC 148 Gets Another Monster Fight with Ortiz-Griffin 3: Fan’s Take (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Hobson Lopes,

Within the past couple of days, fight announcements involving UFC 148 have been storming out of the gate. The event will take place on July 7 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., and is rumored to feature Dominick Cruz defending the UFC bantamweight title against Urijah Faber. It has been announced that Rich Franklin and Cung Le would meet, as well as Michael Bisping and Tim Boetsch. Both of those fights take place in the middleweight division, while a bantamweight showdown with Renan Barao and Jeff Hougland is also scheduled.

The most recent match to be announced for the card is the rubber match between two former world champions, Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin.

These two men first met at UFC 59 in Anaheim, Calif. Ortiz earned the controversial split-decision in what was the fight of the year. When they stepped into the Octagon together again, it would be more than three years later at UFC 106. Griffin earned the split-decision victory that day in Las Vegas, setting up in the minds of many fans, an eventual trilogy.

That is what fans will get this summer when these two men battle. The completion of the trilogy will likely be the last time we see Ortiz in the UFC. His often-shaky relationship with the promotion and UFC President Dana White has been well-documented, so it would make sense for their relationship to end here (aside from a Hall of Fame berth). We have seen some crazier things in the sport than Ortiz returning at some point, but I just don't see it happening.

Ortiz will be coming into the fight with one of the worst streaks in history of the UFC. Since completing his trilogy with Ken Shamrock (3-0), Ortiz has gone 1-6-1 in his last eight fights.

Beating Ortiz won't do much to boost Griffin's resume, but a loss would be terrible. Griffin is 2-3 in his last five fights with his only victories coming against Ortiz and Franklin. He has struggled against those with more all-around talent than he has, which on paper, isn't the case with Ortiz.
