UFC 136 Gets Second Title Fight with Aldo-Florian

The promotion announced Friday evening that a featherweight championship fight pitting Kenny Florian against Jose Aldo has been added to the UFC 136 bill, joining a previously announced lightweight title tilt between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar. Also featuring a pivotal middleweight clash between Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann, UFC 136 goes down Oct. 8 from the Toyota Center.

Widely regarded as one of the sport's pound-for-pound greats, Aldo has terrorized the featherweight ranks while riding a 12-fight winning streak. The Brazilian burst onto the North American fight scene in 2008, rattling off five-straight victories before knocking out then-champion Mike Thomas Brown to capture the featherweight title in 2009.

After successfully defending his WEC strap thrice in the next year, Aldo was awarded the UFC title when the promotions merged in 2011. The 24-year-old successfully defended his new UFC belt for the first time in April, outpointing a game but overmatched Mark Hominick at UFC 129.

Florian has contended for championship gold twice in his UFC career, coming up short in both attempts at the lightweight title. Florian's first shot came in 2006 when he was taken down continually and outpointed by Sean Sherk. After rebounding with six-straight victories in the next two years, “KenFlo” fell short once again, this time to B.J. Penn via fourth-round submission at UFC 101.

The 35-year-old recently made the cut to 145-pounds, wearing down Aldo's teammate Diego Nunes and walking away with a unanimous decision at UFC 131.
