UFC 129 Play-by-Play: Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick

Jose Aldo lands a blow on Mark Hominick at UFC 129

Round 1: Aldo fires a quick one-two combo to open things up. Aldo then establishes that nasty leg kick of his right away. Aldo throws another kick, but this time Hominick catches it. Aldo with a body shot, then a leg kick, followed by a takedown. Hominick looks for an armbar, but Aldo slips out with no problem. Aldo landing some nice inside elbows with Hominick working a closed guard. Aldo comes over the top with a big right hand. The referee decides to stand them up. Hominick looks for a couple of punches, and Aldo takes him right back down again.

Round 2: Hominick getting on the offense punching Aldo to the body. Aldo fires back with a couple nasty punches of his own. Aldo looks for a takedown, but Hominick shrugs him off, and then nails him with a good punch. Hominick getting the better of the exchanges on the feet, but Aldo is able to take the fight back to the ground. Aldo postures up and lands a couple solid shots. Referee John McCarthy has seen enough and stands it up. Hominick pops Aldo with a quick punch, but again the Brazilian slips under and gets a takedown, landing in side control.

Round 3: Quick exchanges but Hominick looks like the fresher fighter right now. Aldo tries for a takedown, but Hominick fights it off this time. Aldo getting more aggressive now, lands a nice punch followed by a leg kick. Aldo looks for another takedown, and again Hominick is able to resist. Hominick lands a stiff jab. Aldo tags Hominick and he drops the canvas. Aldo follows up looking for the finish, but the tough Canadian is able to regain his composure and get back to guard.

Round 4: Hominick tossing his jab out effectively, but Aldo fires back with a hard straight punch. Aldo has tremendous head movement, and tags Hominick again with a straight punch. Aldo throws a low shot and the fight is paused to give Hominick a moment to recover. After the restart, Aldo nails a good leg kick, and Hominick just can’t seem to find Aldo. Aldo cracks Hominick with a shot, dropping him to the canvas for the 2nd time in the fight. Aldo drops down into Hominick’s guard. Hominick has a huge hematoma on his head. The fight is paused for the doctor to check Hominick, but he’s okay and we’re back in action. Aldo pops Hominick with another big straight punch, then gets another takedown.

Round 5: Hominick has to get a finish if he’s going to win this fight. It doesn’t start well with Aldo landing a couple quick punches. Hominick then lands a trip takedown, ending up in Aldo’s half guard. Aldo lands an elbow from the bottom that opens a cut on his cheek, but Hominick is starting to fire shots from the top. Hominick landing hard shots as the crowd comes alive. Hominick hitting good shots, but not enough to put Aldo away as the seconds click away.
