Trials MMA 360: An Inside Look at UFC Fighter Ed Herman’s Gym in Colorado

UFC middleweight Ed Herman has been fighting professionally for the better part of his adult life.

Fighting primarily in the Pacific Northwest of the United States for most of his career, Herman got his big break on the third season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” He lost in the season’s final to Kendall Grove, but his performance on the show launched him into a UFC, where he’s been fighting for the past five years.

He spent much of the last year and a half on the sidelines with a knee injury he suffered in a 2009 bout with Aaron Simpson. Herman recently returned at the TUF 13 Finale, stopping Tim Credeur by TKO in less than a minute.

Not only is his fight career back on track, but so is his business career. Herman and business partner and fellow fighter Ryan Schultz recently opened a new gym in Ft. Collins, Colo., Trials MMA.

Both Herman and Schultz came up through the ranks of Team Quest, and both have been through a lot in their lives, thus the name of the gym.

“The Trials of life. Going through all the things I went through. The Trials of trying to make the team, stuff like that,” Herman answered when asked what the name stood for.

For Herman, who gets back in the Octagon on Aug. 14 at UFC on Versus 5 against Kyle Noke, opening Trials MMA is the realization of a dream.

“That’s been the goal forever. Every since I first started training I always dreamed of having my own gym. I’m excited to have that opportunity now.”
