Toney’s $500K Heads UFC 118 Paydays

James Toney’s 15 minutes -- 3:19 to be exact -- of mixed martial arts fame earned him half a million dollars.

Toney, a 42-year-old former multi-division boxing champion, pocketed an event-high $500,000 in his first-round submission loss to UFC hall of famer Randy Couture at UFC 118 “Edgar vs. Penn 2” on Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston, according to figures obtained from the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission. Couture banked $250,000 for his night’s work.

The 47-year-old Couture, one of only two men to hold titles in two UFC weight classes, took down Toney inside the first minute, glided to mount and positioned himself for the fight-ending arm-triangle choke. Toney tapped out 3:19 into round one.

The Couture-Toney match largely overshadowed the UFC 118 headliner, a rematch between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and former titleholder B.J. Penn. Edgar put on a dazzling performance en route to earning a $96,000 paycheck. Penn left with $150,000 in defeat.
