Join us tonight for episode 3 of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Edgar vs. Team Penn. The Ultimate Fighter airs on Fox Sports 1 starting at 10:00 p.m. ET. We'll have TUF discussion, right here at Bloody Elbow.
Last week was a pretty straight-forward show. The fighters moved in to the house, but there was none of the often accompanying drama. In the first regular fight of the season, B.J. Penn pick Cathal Pendred defeated Frankie Edgar's Hector Urbina by decision, putting Team Penn up 1-0.
This week, Frankie Edgar looks to even the odds as he sends his team preacher into the cage. From the previews, it looks like Todd Monaghan's strong religious views may be a source of some conflict in the house - we shall see. The other big selling point from the previews is Renzo Gracie working with Team Edgar, which should be pretty cool.
Here's a quick glimpse at tonight's fight:
Dan Spohn (8-2, Team Penn) vs. Todd Monaghan (5-3, Team Edgar) - Light Heavyweight
Spohn had one of the most impressive wins of the elimination round, KO-ing his opponent in fast and brutal fashion. Spohn had a 1-3 run in Bellator in 2011/2012, and while that record does not look great on paper, he did go to a split decision loss with Attila Vegh as part of Vegh's run to the Light Heavyweight title. Not bad there. Monaghan had a much tougher fight to get in as he was being beaten by Jake Heun before pulling off a surprise and very impressive armbar out of nowhere for the win. Despite that armbar, Monaghan tends to be more of a fast paced brawler type. The majority of his wins are TKOs in less than 2 minutes, and were in the Heavyweight division. He's slimmed down now and looks much better. This one could be over quickly either way, and while I think Spohn perhaps has the better overall technical game, Monaghan is more aggressive with better wrestling. Look for his to come on strong, take Spohn down, and rough him up for the early win.
