Miesha Tatehas described her current situation as being “in limbo.”
Tate (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has discussed retirement after feeling slighted by the UFC. She was told that a third fight with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) was hers after she defeated Jessica Eye (11-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at UFC on FOX 16.
After the bout, UFC President Dana White said that Tate was the No. 1 contender, adding, “She has worked her way back to Ronda Rousey.”
But then, the UFC blindsided everyone by announcing that Rousey would face Holly Holm (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in a fight that will serve as the main event of UFC 193, which takes place Nov. 14 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.
In this week’s edition of The Speed Bag, Ben Fowlkes breaks down why the retirement talk from the No. 2 ranked fighter in the NOS Energy Drink MMA women’s bantamweight rankings makes plenty of sense.
