Tempers flare as Shields warns WSOF champ: I'm here to kick Palhares' ass

LAS VEGAS – Jake Shields won belts with Shooto, Rumble on the Rock, EliteXC and Strikeforce – and he was a win away from a UFC title, as well – but after tonight’s WSOF 22 event, he believes he’ll have a new strap for his collection.

At Thursday’s pre-event conference, Shields (31-7-1) had a warning for reigning welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares (17-6). They meet tonight in the NBCSN-televised WSOF 22 headliner at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Shields, who’s mentioned the possibility of breaking Palhares’ bones if the opportunity presents itself, said he’s anxious to get his hands on a fighter who’s displayed some dirty tactics in past bouts.

“I think I’ve pretty much already said I’m here to kick Palhares’ ass and take his belt,” Shields said. “I think he’s an amazing fighter, but it’s now my belt.”

When the topic turned to Palhares’ history of holding onto submissions too long – which ultimately prompted the UFC to release the Brazilian in 2013 – Shields said it was a catalyst for his tough talk in the buildup to the fight.

“He hasn’t said anything bad about me,” Shields said. “I think he’s hurting people. It’s kind of bothered me, and a lot of it is just myself; I’m ready for another belt. I’m mentally just psyched and in a good place. And he’s the one who’s going to pay for it.”

Check out the duo’s exchanges, which forced WSOF President Ray Sefo’s intervention at one point, above.
