Te Huna, Romero Booked for Light Heavyweight Bout at UFC 135

Light heavyweights James Te Huna and Ricardo Romero have verbally agreed to square off at UFC 135 in Denver.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph broke news of the matchup Monday; officials from the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Australian office subsequently confirmed the contest on Twitter.

Both Te Huna (Pictured) and Romero will attempt to regain their footing in the 205-pound division following February setbacks.

Sydney-based New Zealander Te Huna was submitted before his adoptive hometown crowd by Swedish “Mauler” Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 127, succumbing to a first-round rear-naked choke. The 29-year-old entered the UFC with a February 2010 stoppage of Igor Pokrajac, but spent 12 months on the shelf nursing various injuries. Since 2006, Te Huna has lost only to Gustafsson and current Bellator Fighting Championships middleweight ace Hector Lombard, knocking out five of six opponents in that span.

Romero, 33, suffered the first true loss of his career at February’s UFC 126, where he fell to Kyle Kingsbury in a 21-second drubbing. The former Ring of Combat light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, Romero had previously finished six consecutive opponents, including Seth Petruzelli, whom Romero submitted via armbar in his July 2010 UFC debut. The AMA Fight Club representative has seen the judges’ scorecards only once in 13 professional outings.

UFC 135 takes place Sept. 24 at Denver’s Pepsi Center and is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title bout between young champion Jon Jones and former titleholder Quinton Jackson.
