Strikeforce Tate vs. Rousey Results: Lumumba Sayers Makes a Statement

Lumumba Sayers

Scott Smith made his return to middleweight at Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey on Saturday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, following a failed attempt to drop down to the welterweight division. Well, his return up a class didn’t go much better.

Heading into the fight, Smith said that Lumumba Sayers wouldn’t be the guy to end his career.

That may be, but Sayers did end Smith’s night rather quickly.

Sayers quickly took Smith to the mat and softened him up with some punches, but inexplicably allowed him back to his feet, where Smith is typically his strongest.

Sayers then scooped Smith up again, leaping backwards to slam him to the mat. Smith briefly attempted a choke, but Sayers turned the tables and locked on a guillotine choke that caused Smith to tap out 1:34 into the fight.

“Whatever Strikeforce puts in front of me,” Sayers said about what is next for him. “I’m not gonna call anybody out; I’m humble.”

For Smith, his career may or may not be over, but sliding down a four-fight skid, he’s likely facing the end of his current tour in Strikeforce.
