Strikeforce 'Houston' Results & Live Play-by-Play

Round 1
Young gets a takedown from the clinch and tries to work some ground-and-pound but Cook defends well and Young backs out and beckons Cook back to his feet. Cook shoots in but Young sprawls. Another shot by Cook but Young again is too quick and lands in top position. The fighters scramble to the end of the three-minute round. Sherdog scores the first period 10-9 for Young.

Round 2
Young shoots out of his corner and attacks Cook to begin the second. He fires a hard punch that catches Cook in the neck. He is hurt and paws at his throat. Young doesn’t give him anytime to recover and hammers him with more punches. Cook circles away furiously and then shoots but is easily rebuffed. Another shot is sprawled on and Cook pays for his missed takedown with a two-punch combination. Cook is hurt and tired and Young is landing at will. The round closes with Young in complete control. Sherdog.com scores it 10-9 for Young.

Round 3
A big right hand from Young welcomes Cook with a stiff right hand to kick off the final round. Cook is stationary and moving straight backwards when Young throws, making him an easy target. Young launches into another flurry and lands three straight punches as he drives Cook back into the cage. Cook shoots and Young sprawls and floors him with a one-two. Young does not follow him to the canvas and referee “Big” John McCarthy motions a weary Cook back to his feet. The fight ends with Young stalking Cook around the cage. Sherdog scores the final round 10-9.

The official scores are 30-27 (twice) and 29-28 for Young, the winner by unanimous decision.


Round 1
Robichaux plants DeLeon with a double into half-guard. He quickly moves to side to avoid a half-hearted guillotine. DeLeon escapes back to his feet where he catches a kick from Robichaux and knocks him to the canvas with a right hand. Roubichaux is right back up and eats another combination that sends him backwards to the cage. DeLeon closes in for the kill but he can’t find the mark. Roubichaux moves in close and DeLeon pulls guard. The round ends and Sherdog scores the frame 10-9 for DeLeon.

Round 2
Roubichaux hits a takedown to open the second of three, three-minute rounds. He works some decent ground-and-pound before DeLeon scrambles free. The flyweights are buzzing all around the cage and Roubichaux nails another takedown into side-control with about 20 seconds remaining in the round. He can’t improve his position and the round ends. Sherdog.com scores the frame 10-9 for Roubichaux.

Round 3
Robichaux pushes forward and DeLeon is looking to counter in the final round. Robichaux throws a front push kick to the head of DeLeon but misses and falls to his back. DeLeon closes in and kicks to his legs. He does not engage and Robichaux stands back up. They stand and trade in the fights final seconds with DeLeon getting the better of the exchange. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for DeLeon.

The official scores are 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28 for Chad Robichaux, who wins by split decision.


Round 1
Trujillo swarms all over Santibanez and drops him with a left-right combination. He pounces and fires away until referee Kerry Hatley steps early in the first round. No time is announced.

Schindler takes out Gooch.


Round 1
Schindler hits a double off an early exchange and immediately moves to mount. He gives it up and moves to side control where he begins to pepper Gooch with short punches. Schindler locks up a cross-side crucifix but is swept by Gooch. Schindler scrambles and ends up on Gooch’s back. He cinches up the rear-naked choke. Gooch stands up and tries to fight off the choke but he crashes to the mat and referee Jon Schorle intervenes, ending the bout.


Round 1
Magalhaes and Long trade pawing strikes early before the BJJ black belt hits a takedown. Long tries to sprawl but is caught in a heel hook. He rolls and rolls and eventually frees himself from the submission. Magalhaes leans on Long as he clings to a front headlock along the cage until the bell sounds. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Magalhaes.

Round 2
A minute into the second round and the action has consisted of a low kick each. The crowd begins to grow a little restless as the fighters dance in the center of the cage. Two minutes in and nothing has changed. With 45 seconds left, Magalhaes drives in and clinches Long against the cage. He can’t get him to the ground before the round ends and the crowd voices their displeasure. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-10.

Round 3
There is another minute of dancing to kick off the third round. This is getting ridiculous. “Draculino” finally gets the fight back to the ground and easily takes Long’s back. He works for a rear-naked choke but can’t sink the submission before the round ends. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Magalhaes.

The official scores are 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 for Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhaes, the winner by unanimous decision.


Round 1
Galvao pushes Patino up against the cage and pulls him to the mat. Galvao tries to pass right up the middle but is denied. He moves to side-control and then tries to take his back. He gets one hook in before “Macaco” shakes him off. Patino pushes forward but walks right into a Galvao left hook that backs him off for a moment. The fighters exchange and “Macaco” folds Galvao with a left hook of his own. He tries to finish it on the ground but Galvao digs deep and fights back, staving off a referee stoppage. Galvao shoots for a single and stops the assault for a brief moment. Galvao is down again from “Macaco” punches and he looks like he is spent. The round closes with Patino in complete control. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-8 for “Macaco.”

Round 2
Galvao looks tired and is winging wild shots early in round two. Galvao shoots in but “Macaco” fends him off along the cage. He keeps working it and is rewarded with the takedown. Galvao gets to half-guard and does some damage with short punches. “Macaco” gets his feet on the hips and pushes Galvao away but he lunges back into his guard with a big right hand. Galvao tries to secure the back again but is shucked off easily. The two trade for a moment before Galvao secures another takedown. Galvao punishes “Macaco” from half-guard with rights and lefts. He rebounds well in the second but is still a point behind on the Sherdog card after earning a 10-9 in the frame.

Round 3
Galvao gets another takedown early in the third, this one of the double-leg variety. He sets up in half-guard again and pounds away at “Macaco.” Galvao is all over Patino who turtles up as he is punched in the side of the head. Galvao keeps it up and referee Jon Schorle, who seemed to be instructing “Macaco” to move, steps in and calls the bout at 2:45 of the final round. “Macaco” is not happy but it was a good come-from-behind win for Galvao.

Cormier (top) vs. Riley.


Round 1
Cormier bullies his way into the clinch but can’t find a takedown. He is relentlessly chasing Riley around the cage but he has been up to the task keeping the fight on the feet. A big right hand from Cormier hurts Riley and he finishes a takedown and pounds away for the finish. Daniel Cormier keeps his ledger clean with a TKO stoppage (tapout to strikes) at 1:02 of the first round.


Round 1
Lashley shoots a double right off the bat and he easily gets it. Lashley punches from the top and then passes to side control. Hard right hands from Lashley. Griggs tries to kick off the fence, but the stronger man has none of it. Lashley works to trap the left arm of his opponent under the leg from side control, but he can’t secure the position. Lashley stuffs a sweep attempt and continues to punch exclusively with his right hand. Griggs uses good leg work to block a mount pass. Lashley moves briefly to north-south position and then ends up in side control on the opposite side as last time. Griggs explodes and gets to his feet, but is quickly taken back down with a high single. Referee Jon Schorle warns Griggs for holding the fence, but the foul didn’t aid his takedown defense. Again Griggs gets to his feet. Lashley lands digging left hands to the body from the clinch against the fence and Schorle separates the fighters. Griggs roughs Lashley up with punches as he shoots another double. Lashley gets the takedown, but he’s bleeding badly from a cut below his left eye.

Round 2
Lashley lifts Griggs high into the air and deposits him hard on the canvas. Lashley hits the body and head with his right hand and passes to side control. Right hands from Lashley find the jaw of Griggs. The crowd starts to boo the inactive fighters and Lashley gets the mount. Lashley is letting loose with his hands and he’s landing with frequency. Griggs bucks to reverse the position, but Lashley is too strong. A right hand lands for Lashley. The former pro wrestler rests in the mount and then opens up with his hands. In complete control, Lashley repeats the sequence of resting and punching from the mount. Schorle stands the fighters. Lashley is winded and slow to stand. He complains about his eye and the doctor checks him out. He tells the doctor he is OK and the fight is restarted. Lashley shoots a double from too far away and Griggs stuffs it. Griggs pounds away with punches and hammerfists and Lashley is in big trouble. Heavy shots are pummeling the ATT product. The bell rings to end the frame, and Lashley is a mess. He wobbles while trying to stand and the fight is called. Griggs takes the TKO win at 5:00 of round two.


Round 1
Noons backs Gurgel up to the cage and Gurgel circles away and kicks the body. Gurgel lands a stinging right hand on the temple and another body kick. Noons goes to the leg with a low kick and Gurgel glances his left foot off the face of his opponent. Gurgel waves Noons on and tells him to bring it. Gurgel aims for the body with a knee and Noons smacks him with a hard right hand to the liver. Back to the body with a left straight and a follow up right goes Noons. Two left hands from Noons find the chin of Gurgel. The fighters trade hard low kicks and then Noons lands an uppercut. Gurgel is bleeding from a cut near his right eye. Noons lands a low kick and ducks under a “Superman” punch attempt. Gurgel fails on a shot and Noons lands a low kick and a body shot. Gurgel runs away and with just seconds left in the round, opens up with his hands and is dropped flat by a left hook a split second after the bell. Gurgel is out of it, but he will come out for the second round.

Round 2
A still wobbly Gurgel comes out and gets rocked right off the bat. A right and left hook send him down and Noons punches until referee Kerry Hatley pulls him off at 0:19 of round two. Noons glanced an illegal knee off the face of Gurgel during the stoppage, but it did not land flush and was not ruled a foul.


Round 1
Kennedy misses a jab and both fighters are hesitant to pull the trigger early. Kennedy blocks a right hook and is pushed back by a front kick. Jacare lands a right hand that buckles the legs of his opponent, but Kennedy fires right back with a right of his own. Kennedy lands a right hook that counters a low kick. Jacare is swinging for the fences and Kennedy is doing a good job of counter punching. Kennedy lands a low kick and Jacare hits him with a right to the body. Jacare connects with an inside low kick to the left leg, and then he goes to the outside. Jacare whiffs on a right-hand lead. Kennedy knocks an off-balanced Jacare to the canvas with a right hand. The Brazilian stands and absorbs a low kick at the bell.

Round 2
The second frame starts at a slow pace as nothing clean has landed past the one-minute mark. Kennedy steps forward and lands a straight right and left. Kennedy slips and Jacare lets him up. Beautiful boxing from Jacare as he jabs, shows head movement and then scores with a straight right. Another right hand lands for the Brazilian. A hard low kick from Kennedy finds its target. The fighters clinch briefly and Kennedy lands a knee to the body. Jacare lands a right-hand counter on the temple and Kennedy goes back to the left leg of his opponent. Jacare shoots a double and Kennedy stuufs it against the fence. One minute remains in the period. Jacare paws out his jab and Kennedy lands another low kick before missing a “Superman” punch. Kennedy blocks a front kick to the face before the horn.

The opening minute of round three sees some sloppy striking that culminates with the fighters ending up clinched against the cage. The middleweights separate and Kennedy glances a jumping right hand. Jacare lands two good right hands high on the head. Kennedy is cut near the bridge of his nose directly to the side of his left eye. Blood trickles down and the Brazilian scores with a straight right. Kennedy winds up and misses a left hook. Jacare steps forward to swing and Kennedy grabs him around the waist and throws him to the canvas. Jacare uses his feet against the cage to spin away from it. Jacare kicks off and stands. Kennedy is bleeding profusely. Nice jab from Jacare. The BJJ black belt is out boxing his foil through 15 minutes in the cage.

Round 4
Kennedy starts round for with a hard low kick to the thigh. Kennedy catches Jacare with a right-hook counter on the chin. Beautiful punch, low-kick combo from Kennedy. Jacare throws haymakers with both hands and Kennedy tries to transition to the Thai plum, but Jacare circles away. Jacare drops levels and fails on a single. The Brazilian sets up a hard right with a left uppercut. Kennedy accidentally kicks the groin and referee “Big” John McCarthy gives him a short reprieve. Several minutes pass and the fight is greenlit. Jacare kicks the legs and Kennedy misses a counter left. Kennedy is clipped with a left hook as the crowd grows restless with the lack of action.

Round 5
Kennedy has a head kick blocked. Kennedy, perhaps down on the official scorecards, is a little more aggressive early in the stanza. Both fighters are active, but neither man has found his range in the fifth and final round. Jacare lands a jab and a right hand. Kennedy is bleeding again from the cut he received in the third round. Kennedy closes the distance and connects with a knee to the body. Jacare moves off the cage with smooth footwork and the fighters are greeted by boos from the crowd. Kennedy cracks Jacare with a straight right to the body. Kennedy misses a left hook and stops a trip attempt. One minute remains. Kennedy ducks under a right hand and slips to the canvas. Jacare moves to his back and Kennedy scrambles to his feet. Jacare lands a hard right hand on the eye. Kennedy slams Jacare hard to the mat at the bell. Close round, just like the previous four.

Round 1
Feijao comes out swinging and Lawal lands two short punches on the chin before dropping levels for a single. Feijao shows good takedown defense against the cage, but Lawal lifts him and delivers him hard to the canvas. What a slam. Feijao scrambles and gets to his feet no worse for the wear. The Brazilian starts to work his jab, but he doesn’t follow up with power. Lawal closes the distance and Feijao lands an uppercut and a knee to the chin before stuffing a takedown. Feijao is landing on the champion. A jumping knee and another knee hit the chin of Lawal. The fighters grow tentative and referee “Big” John McCarthy reminds them they’re in a fight. Hard low kick for Feijao. The first round is all Feijao, save for the massive slam.

Round 2
Feijao cracks the left leg of Lawal with a snapping low kick. Lawal rushes forward and lands a few sloppy punches. Another low kick for the Brazilian. Lawal is stalking the challenger across the cage as Feijao moves backward. Feijao kicks the head with his left foot and Lawal slams him to the floor. Lawal hits the body with his right hand and the challenger scrambles to his feet. Hard body shots from both hands land for Lawal against the cage. Lawal lands a jab and then has a right-hand lead blocked. Lawal drops levels and hits the body with a straight left. Lawal is starting to dig at Feijao’s body. Lawal is switching from southpaw to orthodox, and it’s giving the Brazilian fits. A hard right from the champion finds the body. Lawal drops for a single and Feijao stuffs it with underhooks.

Round 3
Feijao lands a straight right and Lawal is in trouble. Lawal finds his second wind and cracks the challenger with a right. Feijao lands a knee to the chin and a left hook and Lawal falls. The champion shoots a desperate single and Feijao has it stuffed against the cage. Feijao elbows with his right arm and Lawal is absorbing them without offering any defense. His knees go weak and he falls. Referee “Big” John McCarthy saves Lawal at the 1:14 mark and there’s a new Strikeforce light heavyweight champion.
