No, not that Roy Jones, Jr.

Although he shares the same name as the famous world-champion boxer, Roy Jones, Jr. is a light heavyweight mixed martial artist that will be making his promotional debut at Strikeforce Challengers 18 on Aug. 12 in Las Vegas, according to his management team at Authentic Sports Management.

Jones faces Derrick Mehmen at the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort.

“Roy Jones, Jr. is someone to watch in the light heavyweight division,” said Glenn Robinson, Authentic Sports Management.   “With the talented training team he has behind him, I believe he has huge potential and I’m confident he will make that known August 12 in his Strikeforce debut.”

Jones (5-1) is coming off of a knockout loss in his most recent bout, which was in October 2010, but of his five victories all have come by way of knockout or submission. Jones apparently doesn’t like decisions, and he doesn’t intend on changing his stance on that in his Strikeforce debut.

“My thoughts on Mehman… I think I’m just going to knock him out,” said Jones.

Mehmen (11-3) is also making his Strikeforce debut in this fight. Like Jones, he doesn’t much care for decisions either. Of his 14 professional fights, only two have gone to the judges; one a loss, one a victory.

Strikeforce Challengers 18: Gurgel vs. Duarte features a main event pitting former UFC competitor Jorge Gurgel against Strikeforce and Bellator veteran Joe Duarte.
