UFC Fight Night 50 just got a whole lot more punchy.
Heavyweights with proven knockout power will square off at the Sept. 5 card at Foxwoods Casino near Ledyard, Conn., when Matt Mitrione meets Derrick Lewis. FOXSports.com initially reported the bout Wednesday.
Mitrione, a 35-year-old former NFL player from Illinois, was scheduled to meet Stefan Struve at UFC 175 last weekend. That matchup was scrapped at the last moment due to Struve's health scare in the locker room at Mandalay Bay. Mitrione was awarded both his win and show money for the cancelled bout, but asked to be placed into another fight as soon as possibly.
Lewis, meanwhile, has turned heads in his first two fights due to his ferocious punching power. The 29-year old from New Orleans called "The Black Beast" finished Guto Innocente on Sunday night at the TUF 10 Finale.
Lewis carries an 11-2 record into the bout; Mitrione is 7-3. They've scored knockouts in a combined 16 of their 18 wins, with Lewis getting 10 and Mitrione six.
