Scotland's Martin Delaney focused on Cage Warriors 69, not UFC

Undefeated in 11 total fights, Cage Warriors lightweight Martin Delaney doesn’t worry about keeping his perfect record intact.

With eight pro and three amateur wins, you’d think the opposite would be true. Delaney is crossing into the territory where he might be scooped up for “The Ultimate Fighter” or as an injury replacement on a UFC Fight Night card.

But the Scottish fighter said he can’t be bothered by what could happen in the future.

“I used to let it bother me, but I don’t really care,” he told MMAjunkie Radio. “It’s only fight I’m doing [Saturday]; it’s not as if I’m doing eight fights. It’s one fight, one guy, for three rounds. And that’s it.”

Delaney (8-0) is booked for today’s Cage Warriors 69 event at The Forum in London opposite Damir Hadzovic (8-2). The bout streams live on MMAjunkie.

Not worrying is a habit Delaney picked up during three years as a pro, but that attitude doesn’t extend to the cage. After finishing his first four opponents as a pro, he went through a spate of decisions that were admittedly less impressive.

As it turns out, Delaney wasn’t worrying enough about the way the fight ended, preparing himself for a three-round fight as opposed to a finish. While most would say hedging against a longer fight is a sensible thing to do, in his case, he set himself up for a decision.

“I think the block was because I was fighting guys higher up the rankings, and I was going into the fight thinking it was going to go three rounds, but it was going two rounds,” he said.

In his most recent fight, however, he expected to end his night early, and it happened just as he planned.

“I was looking for the finish, and I got the finish,” he said of a recent submission of Thibault Colleuil. “So it changed my view up a little. Hopefully I’ll go back to finishing fights again.”

Undoubtedly, an attitude like that is just what the bigger promotions want to hear.
