Scorecards for UFC Fight Night 29's Jake Shields vs. Demian Maia headliner

BARUERI, Brazil – A night of violent action concluded with a grappling-heavy headliner that resulted in a razor-thin split decision. Check out the scorecards, which MMAjunkie.com obtained from the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA), for Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 29 main event between Jake Shields and Demian Maia.

The welterweight contenders went five rounds at Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Although Maia (18-5 MMA, 12-5 UFC) was a 3-1 favorite in his home country, Shields (29-6-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) pulled off the upset in the FOX Sports 1-televised headliner. The scores ultimately were 48-47, 47-48 and 48-47 for the American.

The judges got there in different ways, though. Richard Bertrand, Guilherme Bravo and Sal D’Amato unanimoulys scored the second round for Shields and the fourth round for Maia. But each saw the remaining rounds differently.

MMAjunkie.com scored it 48-47 for Shields after giving him Rounds 2, 3 and 5. D’Amato concurred and issued his scorecard to that effect. Bertrand also scored the fight for Shields but gave him Rounds 1, 2 and 5. The dissenter, Bravo, gave Shields the second and third rounds while the rest went to Maia.
