They’ve both suffered past losses to reigning champion Ronda Rousey, they’re both still top contenders, and they both need a UFC fight.
For Sarah Kaufman, it’s naturally led her to a desire to fight Miesha Tate.
The former Strikeforce champion, who defeated Tate via decision at a 2009 Strikeforce show, took to Twitter late Friday night to campaign for the bout:
The week's about come to a close and I'm wondering, @MieshaTate how much time would you like to prepare? We both want it, fans want it too!—

Prior to a recent victory over Leslie Smith at the TUF Nations Finale, Kaufman (17-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) said she wants a slot on the upcoming UFC 174 fight card, which takes place in Kaufman’s home province of British Columbia on June 14. As for possible opponents at the Vancouver event, she mentioned Tate, Liz Carmouche and Cat Zingano.
Although former No. 1 contender Zingano (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is targeting a summer return from a serious knee injury, there’s no firm date. Additionally, after Tate (14-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) recently posted a win over Carmouche (9-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) in UFC on FOX 11's co-headliner, “Cupcake” probably remains the most viable option.
Soon after her victory, which halted a two-fight skid (and overall 1-3 run that included a pair of UFC and Strikeforce title losses to Rousey), Tate said she wants to welcome Gina Carano to the UFC after her five-year hiatus sport.
However, there’s no guarantee Carano is taking a return seriously, and another potential opponent that Tate mentioned – former pro boxing champion Holly Holm – had little success in recent UFC contract negotiations.
That could make the only other name that Tate mention – Kaufman – a good fit for both.
