Sara McMann sees Ronda Rousey's loss to Holly Holm as good for the entire division

Sara McMann’s first attempt to take the UFC women’s bantamweight title went poorly. The Olympic silver medalist in women’s freestyle wrestling was caught by a knee to the body from then-champion Ronda Rousey at UFC 170 and lost the fight at the 1:06 mark of Round 1.

Now, with Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) dropping the title after being knocked out by Holly Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at UFC 193, McMann is hoping that another crack at the belt could be in her future.

“For my career, it’s really good because it’s a lot harder to get a rematch,” McMann told MMAjunkie while in attendance at this past Saturday’s UFC on FOX 17 event in Orlando. “Even if it was a controversial fight between Ronda and I, it’s still hard to do that. I still have to do my part. I think that if I have some dominating wins I can make the case for a title fight against her, rather than a rematch against Ronda. It’s good for me, and actually, it’s good for the entire division. Everyone who has faced Ronda gets a fresh shot at a new champion.”

McMann has plenty of work ahead of her, however. The 35-year-old is on a two-fight losing skid, having been submitted by Amanda Nunes at UFC Fight Night 73 in August after losing a January majority decision to Miesha Tate at UFC 183.

If she can go on a run, a battle between the wrestler and former boxing champ Holm could present an interesting contrast of styles.
