UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has heard Bethe Correia’s apology, but “Rowdy” isn’t buying it, and she’s ready to make that painfully clear.
“To bring my family into it, they don’t deserve that, and they didn’t ask for that,” Rousey said at a recent media session promoting her UFC 190 bout with Correia. “And I need to make sure that nobody else tries that ever again.”
Correia (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), of course, is no stranger to barbs from Rousey (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC). The undefeated Brazilian challenger has gone out of her way in her UFC run to take shots at the champ, famously offering hand gestures after of her victories over Rousey’s friends Jessamyn Duke and Shayna Baszler to let the champ know she was next.
But when Correia said she intended to embarrass Rousey so greatly on Aug. 1 that she would want to “kill herself,” the champ – whose father committed suicide – didn’t take too kindly to the claim.
Correia later clarified that she wasn’t aware of Rousey’s family history, but “Rowdy” isn’t buying that claim.
“I think that her actually pretending that she didn’t know to save face was just as insulting as what she said in the first place,” Rousey said.
Rousey and Correia meet in UFC 190’s pay-per-view headliner at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena.
Rousey insists the fight will be an absolute grudge match, at least from her point of view. And while she’s dispatched previous competitors in mere seconds, she may be willing to make good on her promise of extending Correia’s time in the cage, even if it’s only to inflict punishment.
“Some things take longer,” Rousey said. “Like a choke takes longer than an armbar, and a TKO takes longer than the choke. I might go for the prolonged finish, instead.”
