Report: Overeem Gets Suspended Sentence, Community Service, Counseling for Battery Charge

Overeem was also reportedly handed a suspended 90-day jail sentence. However, that sentence -- along with the misdemeanor battery charge -- will reportedly be dismissed if the fighter completes the community service and counseling requirements. Overeem is slated to appear in court on Sept. 26.

The charge stems from a Jan. 2 incident at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, where Overeem allegedly shoved a woman in the face. The alleged confrontation came just days after his dominant victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.

The heavyweight did not appear in court today but was represented by Las Vegas attorney David Chesnoff, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Sherdog.com could not reach the fighter’s representation for comment.

A former light heavyweight standout with the defunct Pride Fighting Championships, Overeem has found great success since bulking up to heavyweight. After winning the K-1 World Grand Prix kickboxing title in addition to acquiring championships in Dream and Strikeforce, Overeem made his UFC debut against Lesnar on Dec. 30, finishing the hulking former champion with a vicious body kick and punches at 2:26 of round one. Overeem will now challenge reigning titlist Junior dos Santos at UFC 146, taking place May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
