Light heavyweight MMA prospect Philip
Masterson of Westlake, Ohio, was found dead in the woods of
South Bass Island on Tuesday.
The amateur fighter, whose older brother Matt
Masterson has compiled a 9-3 professional record, allegedly
engaged in a fight over the weekend while attending a party on the
island. According to a
report from the Sandusky Register, Masterson, 25, allegedly
fought at the party with 27-year-old Zachary Brody.
Both men reportedly went their separate ways following the
altercation, but Masterson went missing shortly thereafter. On
Monday, Masterson's mother reported her son's absence to Put-in-Bay
police, stating he'd been missing for approximately 18 hours. The
fighter's family then reportedly went looking for Masterson on
South Bass Island on Tuesday, eventually finding him dead and
calling 911. According to the report, Ottawa County sheriff Robert
Bratton stated that Masterson appeared to have been severely beaten
prior to his death.
Bowling Green police reportedly arrested Brody on Wednesday while
walking near his home on charges of murder, voluntary manslaughter
and felonious assault.
Brody's bail was set at $750,000 at a Thursday morning hearing at
the Ottawa County Municipal Court. As Brody's family is reportedly
still in the process of acquiring Brody an attorney, the remainder
of the hearing has been postponed until Sept. 14 at 8:30 a.m.
