Report: Kenny Florian Injured; Melvin Guillard Tapped As Replacement To Face Evan Dunham

Kenny Florian

A change has been made to the upcoming “Fight for the Troops” show in Texas as main event fighter Kenny Florian has been forced out of his fight with Evan Dunham due to an injury sustained in training.

Sources close to the situation alerted MMAWeekly.com to the injury on Monday. Florian’s removal from the card was originally reported by MMAJunkie.com.

Florian had just recently traveled to Arizona to work with WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson as he gets ready for his upcoming title defense against Anthony Pettis later this month. There’s been no word as to what the injury was or how long Florian will be sidelined, but it’s enough for him to not be able to take the fight on the Jan 22 card.

Additionally, Heavy.com is reporting that Melvin Guillard has been tapped as a replacement for Florian and will face Evan Dunham in the night’s main event instead. Guillard was originally set to face former training partner Yves Edwards on the same card on the “Fight for the Troops” show.

MMAWeekly.com has yet to receive official confirmation that Guillard has indeed been pulled for the fight, but his current opponent Yves Edwards stated when reached for comment that he had not been notified of any change yet by the UFC.

Florian posted an update about his injury, which occurred earlier today, on his official website.

“It is with deep regret that I will not be able to compete in my scheduled fight against Evan Dunham on January 22nd, due to a knee injury I sustained during training this morning,” Florian wrote. “Although I have not had an MRI as of yet; the doctors are cautiously optimistic that it will not require surgery.”

Florian went on to say he his optimistic about a return during the first half of 2011.
