Strikeforce fighter Gian Villante on Saturday told Newsday.com that he has a signed bout agreement in place to face Derrick Mehmen at Strikeforce’s May 19 event in San Jose, Calif.
Strikeforce officials have yet to confirm the bout.
Villante (9-3) has a 2-2 record since signing with Strikeforce, but has won his last two bouts for the promotion. He was an All-American linebacker at Hofstra University, gaining success in MMA by winning the Ring of Combat heavyweight title.
Mehmen (12-4) won his only Strikeforce bout by defeating Roy Jones – no, not the boxer – in August of last year. He is, however, coming off of a loss to Rodney Wallace at WMMA 1 on Saturday night, which could jeopardize the fight with Villante.
Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier are set to square off in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix finals at the May 19 event.
