Former UFC champion Randy Couture’s retirement has been a hot topic of conversation several years now. He is questioned about being at the end of his run after every fight.

Couture himself sees the end of his career as, well, open-ended.

He came close to calling it quits after his last fight, a first-round drubbing of heavyweight boxing champion James Toney, saying that if he couldn’t get a fight that excited him, Couture would walk away.

One of the fights he wanted was former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Couture sees Machida as an interesting puzzle to solve.

For a time, it didn’t look like the fight he wanted would come to fruition, but eventually, the UFC brass made it happen.

Couture doesn’t see the Machida as the next step to another title run.

“(Another title run would be) just the icing on the cake. That’s not really what it’s about for me at this point,” he told MMAWeekly.com.

Without a title run in his plans, will the Machida fight at UFC 129 on April 30 be Couture’s swan song?

He’s not quite ready to make that declaration either, not wanting to become “the Brett Favre of MMA.”

MMAWeekly.com conducted the following video interview with Couture where he talks about how the Machida fight came together, his interest in the fight, all the retirement talk, and how the 47-year-old former champion sees the twilight of his career…

It’s not unlike bringing your kids in for their first swimming lesson, only to discover you share a local pool with Michael Phelps. Or going for a check-up on a balky knee and unwittingly walking straight into the office of Dr. James Andrews. Serendipity is quite the mad scientist, and another of its experiments reached full expression last week when, after a protracted and public negotiation period, women’s bantamweight Holly Holm signed a five-fight deal with the UFC. There are six title fights currently scheduled between now and the end of the year. That's six fighters who have a chance to achieve the ultimate goal of being a UFC champion. Unlucky for them, there are far more than six fighters who have a shot at being champions by the end of the year. There are No. 1 contender matches scheduled, top-level fighters waiting for an opportunity to fight, and others who are waiting on the sidelines for their chance to fight for the title. The UFC continues to snap up talent faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Because the UFC is acquiring fighters at such a rapid pace, I've left a few people off my recent "Welcome to the UFC" scouting posts. Fighters like Sam Alvey, Kevin Casey, Leonardo Mafra (both Casey and Mafra are actually returning), and Rin Nakai and Tina Lahdemaki (who were each covered in seperate posts). Hopefully I won't have to do this much more, but with the accelerated rate at which the UFC appears to be signing t more

In the prime of his fighting career, Georges St-Pierre—the former welterweight king and pound-for-pound great—walked away from MMA just eight months ago, citing personal issues. Months after his departure, the MMA community gained greater insight on what St-Pierre’s concerns were partially hinged upon: the use of performance-enhancing drugs in MMA and the UFC. As the months went by, it became readily apparent that those sentiments were not unique to St-Pierre. Several other fighters, such as Bri more
