Rafael dos Anjos-Conor McGregor, Holly Holm-Miesha Tate official for UFC 197 in March

The blockbuster UFC 197 event featuring two championship fights and three UFC titleholders is official for March 5.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos will put his belt on the line against featherweight champ Conor McGregor in the main event, while women’s bantamweight champ Holly Holm will face Miesha Tate in the night’s co-feature.

It was reported this past week that verbal agreements were in place for dos Anjos (25-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC) vs. McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) vs. Tate (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC). Both fights were made official today by the UFC.

UFC 197 is scheduled for March 5 and was originally expected to take place in Rio de Janeiro. However, the card will now take place in Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. The main card will air on pay-per-view with preliminary card action expected to take place on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

After a historic 2015 campaign that earned him MMAjunkie’s “Fighter of the Year” award, McGregor will have the chance to make more UFC history when he takes on dos Anjos. He can become the first fighter to ever hold two UFC titles simultaneously, a plan he revealed following a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo to capture featherweight gold at UFC 194 in December.

Former 155-pound champ B.J. Penn attempted to achieve a similar accomplishment in 2009 when he challenged former ex-welterweight titleholder Georges St-Pierre at UFC 94, but “The Prodigy” fell short and suffered a fourth-round TKO loss.

Taking the championship from dos Anjos will be no easy task. The Brazilian has won five consecutive bouts and established his place at the No. 1 lightweight in the world with a title-winning victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 185 in March followed by a 66-second destruction of Donald Cerrone to defend the belt for the first time at December’s UFC on FOX 17 event.

Oddsmakers have pegged dos Anjos as the betting favorite for the champion vs. champion affair.

After weeks of stating a rematch between Holm and former women’s 135-pound champ Ronda Rousey was next for “The Preacher’s Daughter,” UFC President Dana White said this past week on FOX Sports 1’s “UFC Tonight” that Holm would fight someone else next.

Following Holm’s vicious knockout of Rousey at UFC 193 in November to capture the belt, a second meeting between the two was planned for UFC 200 in July. Holm stated she wasn’t interested in waiting eight months to fight again, though, and her wish to defend her belt against another contender has been granted.

Tate was promised a UFC title shot against Rousey earlier this year when she defeated Jessica Eye in what was promoted as a No. 1 contender bout at UFC on FOX 16. Despite the promise of a title fight due to a four-fight winning streak, Tate was skipped over for the opportunity and Holm was instead booked as Rousey’s challenger.

Disgruntled by the way in which the situation was handled, Tate threatened retirement from the sport. When Rousey lost, however, the situation changed and opened up a chance to fight the new champion.
