Former champions B.J. Penn and Carlos Condit will likely square off in a welterweight scrap this fall.

After both fighters referenced the proposed matchup Monday on Twitter, Sherdog.com confirmed with a source close to the bout that Penn and Condit have been tentatively scheduled to meet in October.

The UFC currently has two events scheduled that month: UFC 136 on Oct. 8 and UFC 137 on Oct. 29. A Monday tweet from Penn implied that the bout would take place on the latter card.

Penn had been rumored to lock horns with Jon Fitch this summer in a rematch of their February tussle at UFC 127 that ended in a majority draw. However, both competitors were forced to withdraw from the proposed bout due to injury.

Prior to his draw with Fitch, Penn had rebounded from back-to-back defeats by knocking out old rival Matt Hughes in just 21 seconds in November. The UFC 123 victory marked the Hawaiian’s first bout back at 170 pounds after consecutive defeats to current UFC lightweight king Frankie Edgar.

While Penn has held both the UFC welterweight and lightweight titles, Condit has yet to capture UFC gold. However, the former WEC 170-pound champ has performed impressively during his Octagon tenure, racking up a promotional record of 4-1. Since dropping his UFC debut to Martin Kampmann by split decision, the 27-year-old has rattled off four-straight wins, besting Jake Ellenberger, Rory MacDonald, Dan Hardy and, most recently, Dong Hyun Kim on July 2.
